Community Service Update 2023 - 2024

Thanks to the generosity of Nimble Thimbles, our Community Service program has grown tremendously, and as the program has grown, so have the storage issues. As a result, and to alleviate the burden of storing bins and bins of fabric and kits, we are revamping Community Service.

As of July 1 2023, we will only accept tops that already have backing (pieced, pressed and ready to be quilted) and binding (cut into strips and ready to be stitched to the quilt). The Community Service team will continue to provide batting for the quilts, and will disseminate to our quilting partners (both long-arm and domestic) to quilt and return to the group for binding. We welcome anyone who wishes to participate in the quilting process to do so.

With these changes, you will see over the next several meetings that Leslie Vidler and Debbie Kattleman, our current CS leaders, will make available our current kits and backing fabric. Please take as many kits as you can, and pull backing fabric and binding fabric from our stash to go with those kits. Ideally, everyone will take 5-6 kits to complete over the next year or two.

Additionally, on May 30, 2023 a fifth Tuesday, we are planning a Community Service sew night to piece backings and bindings to pair up with any remaining kits. You also are welcome to bring any kits you pick up prior to May 30 to stitch and pair with backings and bindings.

By working together and spreading our kits and backings to all of you, we will eliminate the need to store so much fabric, spread the work of piecing backings and bindings across the group, and streamline our CS efforts. Please assist us in this transition by taking as many kits, backing and binding off our hands as you can.

Our current CS quilts are given to:

·        Gathering Humanity, which helps refugees settle in the Phoenix area;

·        Pregnancy Crisis Center, which assists young moms through their pregnancies;

·        Moms and Babies Veterans Program, which gives new veteran moms and babies supplies including quilts;

·        Two Hospice organizations in the Valley: Infinity Hospice and Hospice of the Valley.

If you have any questions about our revamped CS program, would like to take a more active role in CS or have suggestions about the program, please contact Penny Boese at 480-862-3129 or pboese@cox.net

From your 2023-24 CS Team,
